Fined on train from Midleton to Cork

I received a fine yesterday for not having a ticket on the Midleton cork line. I assumed my annual ticket was in my wallet when I boarded the train, as it is 99.9% of the time but it wasn't.

What had actually happened was that on the train home the previous night, I had my annual ticket checked by the ticket inspector, who by coincidence, was the same guy who fined me yesterday. Instead of putting the ticket into my wallet, I put it into my pocket, as I was on the phone at the time. I happened to be wearing a different suit yesterday and didn't realise that my ticket wasn't in my wallet until I was asked for it on the train.

I have emailed off an appeal with a copy of my ticket. Had anyone else had a similar incident and if so were they successful with an appeal?

Potentially, your only saving grace is that it was the same inspector.

However, as an annual ticket holder, if you don't have your ticket with you, you are mean to buy a ticket if you want to travel. For all they know, you gave the ticket to someone else so they could pass through ticket barriers.

I know you're meant to buy a ticket if you don't have the pass on you and I certainly would have if I'd known. But there are no barriers in Midleton so nothing would have prompted me to check. Also me giving my pass to someone wouldn't make any sense because I'd still need a ticket to get through the barriers in cork.

has happened to me a couple of times, and I've managed to get the fine cancelled by sending them in details of my annual pass.

Well that's good to hear. Iwould hope that common sense would prevail

Well it's two weeks since I emailed in my appeal. No response yet. Will they respond regardless of whether my appeal is successful or not?

Took 3 months for the initial response when I emailed them.
(then asked to send proof, I did, they ignored this and further emails & sent it to the Courts as an unpaid fine. don't expect a decent level of service from them  )
