I'd love to move to Dublin

I'm a single guy in my 30s living and working in Waterford , i would really love to move to Dublin or Cork because I find Waterford quite boring to be honest with you . I don't have any friends here and there isn't many social events or things to do here , I know meet up is going to be suggested but there's nothing on that for waterford . For a city it really is quite dull , there are towns in Ireland that are much better . My problem is though I'm in a permanent job and it pays close to 60k because I'm on shift and do some overtime I also have full health cover paid for , I am confident I would find employment in my field in Dublin but I would probably have to go on contract , lose my health benefits and because most jobs in my field are days , I would also lose my shift premium . I could probably get an increase in my basic wage alright but I'd still be looking at around 40k a year . So you see my predicament , move to a much more expensive place to live whilst at the same time taking a 20k cut in salary

Could you try interviewing to see what's actually out there and actual offers, and go from there?
No point having extra money if you're unhappy in your life

go job hunting and see how that works out.

living in dublin or cork on less money mighn't be the greatest thing either. renting is expensive in both places. so give consideration to all options before you make any decisions.

as you're on shift work, could you arrange to take up some hobby that might get you into cork city or even dublin in your time off to see how things go?

A single guy living in Dublin, you will survive comfortably on 40k.

Hi OP I understand completely where you are coming from I'm back living in Waterford, even though I like my job, I'd prefer to get back to Dublin. If you do go down the contracting route it can be difficult during times between contracts whilst looking for work. Like the other posters said, you could live comfortably there on less than 40,000. Have you looked into the possibility of taking a career break from your current job, if your current employer offers it? You could then take off for a year give Dublin or elsewhere a shot and have the security of your current job to go back to if it doesn't work out?

60k is Waterford is a fantastic salary in the city. Accommodation is cheap in Waterford.
40k wont go as far in Dublin ..... I would say on your off days try and commute to Dublin or Cork for a hobby.

A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush. I understand this as I have moved back to the city too.

if you stay in waterford, for that 20k you could rent a houseshare (or at that amount an apt to yourself) in Cork, thats €1500pm and travel down for weekends/days off, and go out and meet people/apply for jobs until you find one that matches your current one.

I wish I had your predicament.. If I was you I'd get out of this country, you seem to be have a skill and getting well paid for it, if I was you I'd be looking further afield, Dublin is not the end of the world.
