If I buy a phone locked to a UK network, I presume I'll still have to get it unlocked here? Will it work ok?

It would have to be unlocked.

If it's locked to a network that operates here, then it'll work for that network (eg vodafone, three, o2, tesco)

This is terrible advice, it won't work. They use different operator codes.

Because 3 UK don't lock their handsets. Most of the others do.
