50hz motion rate is pretty low by today's standards but as a second or occasionally used TV it will probably do the job.

Is a higher refresh rate necessarily a good thing? - seen complaints about 100Hz TVs on here before.

Just looking to pick up a decent relatively cheap TV for the folks. Don't think the refresh rate will be much of an issue for them as they'll be watching mostly SD sky anyway

It depends; 100 Hz is definitely worthwhile for fast-moving images, e.g. sports. At 50 hz, you might see what's called motion lag or blurring of the moving image.

But when you go above 100 Hz, essentially your TV starts creating its own frames to fill in the blanks between the frame rate it's receiving and the 200/400 Hz picture the viewer wants. So what happens is you get a picture that is too smooth, this is called the 'soap opera effect' and it doesn't look great at all.

I have a Panasonic that claims it can do 1200 Hz but I always have this disabled because it can be unwatchable except for sport.

So really, 100 Hz is fine for nearly all purposes. I wouldn't buy a 50 Hz TV though, unless it was going to be your second TV.

Finally, if you like buying branded items, you should know that JVC no longer make their own TVs, they've licensed out their name. It may not bother people, but it's really only Samsung, LG, Panasonic and Sony who actually make their own TVs any more.

So all in all, I don't think this is a great bargain. At the claimed "full price" of €499 on the Currys website, it would be an outright rip-off. My advice would be to hold off until January sales.

Power City have some alright deals at the moment. I got a 42" 1080P 100Hz LG TV there a short while ago for €350 (actually bought 2!).

I have no plans to use a "Smart" TV, since you can find plenty of cheap devices to give nearly the same features (I see them as similar to TV-VCR combos from years back).
