Hi I'm in my final year of school and I am naturally thinking about courses. I went to dcu open day and found a deep interest in international relations. I'm concerned and hesitant about doing this course though as I'm unsure about what Career I can actually get out of it... Is it a pointless degree ?

I studied Politcs & IR at Undergrad level (not in DCU), did the IR MA in DCU, and an M.Litt and PhD in St. Andrews, so have had a lot of exposure to IR Grads between friends and students whom I tutored.

It really is a case of you get out what you put it in. It opens doors to lots of NGOs, Political Risk Assessment Firms, Governmental organisations, Supranational organisations.. etc.. But also lots of other fields, depending how you specialise. Sure there are folk who will do the course and get nothing out of it, but in reality if you put the effort in, you can go places. It can be competitive, and some internships are hand to secure but in my opinion its worth it.

Do you have more than one language? Would you mind travelling for work? Would you object to being in a remote / distant country? Do you mind applying for countess internships and possibly being rejected from your first choices?

These are all points which you must consider if you want to delve into the world of IR, and get a career in the field.
