Hi All, Should Santa bring a laptop or PC to an 11 year old who wants to start out gaming? Is a budget of 500 unrealistic? Any makes/models advice would be greatly appreciated.

PC, they are much better bang for your buck. You can get a decent PC for €500 provided you build it yourself. Unlikely you will get a good gaming pc pre built for €500.

Santa should either ensure the girl has NO ACCESS to the internet on such a device :P ..... or he should get her a Wii U with like 4 games and let her enjoy the last few fleeting glimpses of her childhood :o

Laptops generally aren't good for gaming, unless you are planning on spending a lot of money. You'll get far more bang for your buck with a desktop machine.

I'd suggest asking the lads over at the Pc Building & Upgrading forum to put a spec together for you. Hardwareversand will build it and deliver it to you, almost ready to go. You'll just need to install Windows.

Desktop all the way. Birthday and christmas presents for the next five years can then be minor upgrades.

It can be like two presents wrapped into one, if they like lego they can spend christmas day putting it together.

Sorry for jumping in on thread, my 15yr old has been looking for a gaming PC for a while now, I couldn't understand why as he already has a ps4 & a laptop (shows how little I know) I thought they would cost about €1000, is it possible to get one built for half that price? There's nothing else he wants or needs for Xmas so I'd love to do this for him. Any advice? I could get the specs off him.

OP, Kids are falling over themselves to play Minecraft.

I suggest that you go look at the minimum specs for that and design a pc around them.

Definitely a pc. I used laptops for gaming for 3 years. I went through a laptop a year because they would overheat from playing for a few hours every day or something else would go wrong. Each laptop cost €600 and was decent for gaming. Eventually I decided it would be cheaper to build a pc myself and spent €800 on one 2 years ago. It's still going strong and playing new games on high settings.

Maybe you should post here LINK and ask them what they would build for what you're willing to spend. The guys on there will tell you what kind of pc you can get.

PC no question but you'll need another few hundred for something thats a bit future proof. A decent gaming laptop will cost a bomb.

Check adverts for a something second hand.

Its also much easier to upgrade a desktop incrementally over time.

Also to keep note of, not all games are optimised for laptop GPU's. An example recently was 'The Forest' ran fine on Desktops but completely stuttery on high end laptops. While they fixed the optimisation for laptops GPU's for this game, it may not always be the case so for other games so a Desktop is definitely the way to go.
