    hello everybody,

I am renovating and have insulated the old part of the house but now I am up to the extension which was built in the 80's.
This has a cavity wall with 2 inches of polystyrene.

I have used 62 mm insulated plasterboard on the old concrete walls but is this necessary here or is it overkill?

    Thanks a lot,

    John

your cavity walls with 50mm polystyrene have a u value of 0.41w/m2/k(aprox) and if you add 62mm insulated slab to this the u value is 0.24w/m2/k so you almost halve the heat loss through the wall over what is there now. ps to use u values w=watts m2=area k= the tempature difference between inside and outside in Celsius . so w multiplied by m2 multiplied by k, multiplied by the number of hours you want to keep the room at that temp to get kwh lost through the wall
