Why are there so many competitions on Irish radio?

I'm wondering how many people actually enter these things? I have never felt the inclination to enter one, even if the prize was something I'd really enjoy.

The number of times its then mentioned in the show, and repeated over and over.........you listening Matt Cooper?

    Anyone else hate them?

I agree totally with you and they drive me mad. I now its a revenue stream for them but the constant repeating of the quiz question and the number to text in makes me turn off. I turn on the radio to either hear some music or some news chat not to be bombarded with some stupid question a five year old would answer and to win a pair of tickets for some B rate singer playing on a Wednesday night above in Dublin.

Agreed and even worse when they're linked to interviews with the same companies. 'Sure we'll give you a few free **** to give away, if you give us a nice soft interview'

We'll soon be back to the sponsored radio shows of the 1960s etc.

They make money. Until they don't make money they won't stop.

Its a lot more than being given the stuff to give away - they're paid to give it away in most cases.

The Ray Foley Show takes the piss at times. This morning they had: James Blunt albums, a bouquet of flowers, €100 on Eh, Yeah, OK, €5000 free money minute, Disney on Ice tickets and whatever they're giving away in the Seven Days game this week.

Cash Money. Sales make a killing on promos right?

All you have to do is answer the following question:
    The capital of Ireland is
    A)Dublin
    B)Bangkok
    C)Alpha Centauri

Only in Ireland would people complain about someone giving away something for free
I've entered tons of competitions and I've won an impressive amount of prizes in the past year.
I'm glad they run comps; no better feeling than being told you've won €1000 when you're broke and your car's on the blink!

Yeah, we must all start entering these, cos we are guaranteed to win.

I listen to the radio to hear music or analysis/news/debate, not hear a competition to win tickets to some artist I don't want to see repeated 10 times in a hour.

And I would say that many of them are not 'free' to enter as you say.

I agree, It's all too common. When Paul McLoone is on every link is full of the same plugs for whatever he is promoting that week. I know it pays bills but it gets me switching to an alternative.

.... my pet hate of Irish radio's obsession with competitions reached new levels today when I happened to tune into the Will Leahy show on RTE2.

It was around 5:25pm and he started to talk about a competition giving away €2k and you had to text in whether the current famous bike race was the Tour De France or Tour of Kerry or Dingle or some other witty place.

Now he started to chat about it and gave out the question and the number to text, and I am not joking, he repeated it over and over and over for several minutes. I left the room at one point and came back in and he was repeating it all again. I gave out to the OH about him.

Later I am going to listen back to the show just to time how long he actually spoke about this competition! Thats how uch he annoyed me!

Edit: just listened back to it (I know I know, too much time on my hands) - he starts talking about the competition 22:35 into the show, and stops at 26:06. Three and a half minutes !!
