Whats that contraption in T1?

Coming home from a trip this morning. Something caught my eye and it made me curious.

I left the baggage hall in T1, walked through customs and there is a weird "airlock system" which you walk into, the door behind closes and the outer door opens to let you out. I looked up and saw dark red plastic panels in the ceiling.

Is this some sort of scanner or is it an over-the-top one way system.

(I'm assuming its ok to ask this and its not some elaborate security device)

    Thanks all

is it an over-the-top one way system.

    It's this.

There either is or was one on the entrance to Pier A / 200 gates due to the crossing inbound/outbound traffic also.

It's an elaborate one way system. There's one in Cork too. It saves on having to have an Airport Police officer at the exits.

That makes sense, thanks folks. I do remember the days when you had what looked like a big reception desk with an airport policeman sitting there.

While walking through it this morning, I looked up and the red plastic panels looked like sensors and it does look very technical.

While on the subject, what's with the screens facing you when you walk landside? Are they just to force people to go left or right?

As above, its to enforce the one-way system. Seen them a a couple of other airports, most notable in Alicante on my hols during the summer.

I would guess so. So many pax walk out into arrivals and stop dead in their tracks to look for greeting party. The panels force them to go left/right and thus keep the exit moving.

    Is it just a mantrap?

I.e. you can't go through one door until the other has shut securely?

They also allow Customs to conduct their business without prying eyes from the waiting pax in the arrivals hall.

Finally an explanation for those bloody panels in DUB T1 arrivals. They're a pain in the ass if you're meeting someone to surprise them and they're not expecting you. You can't watch both exits at the same time. I hate them.
