So... I have mature (!) skin... well I'm 42 even though I wouldn't call it mature myself lol
It's also slightly sensitive & can be dry & flaky in places
But my biggest problem is blackheads on my forehead, nose, cheeks & chin... really hate it :(

It was never this bad in the past. .. a few black heads around my nose but nothing dreadful... it's getting worse as I get older!

I use LRP Effaclar to wash & Effaclar toner too (though I do find it a bit harsh in places it is good but can really sting especially around the base of my nose where I have some psoriasis or something!)

The problem I REALLY have is finding a decent moisturiser that won't clog my pores... I've tried the effaclar one but it clogged them up (apparantly it's a new formulation).
Currently I'm using the Boots own brand for teenage skin which is ok for not blocking pores but not very good for the dryness or sensitivity. .. I've tried neutrogena & clean&clear but same thing...

I don't mind paying a bit extra for something that will work... if it exists!!

Would you consider investing in a clarisonic? You'll never look back!

I'd hazard a guess and say you're stripping your skin of all it's moisture and oils if it's sensitive, dry and flaky. First off stop using effaclar; it's probably too harsh for you. You can use the cream as a topical treatment for spots.

If you're 42 you need to stop using products for teenagers. Start double cleansing using an oil or balm. Una Brennan does a fantastic oil for €13 which boots stock. Boots botanicals have a great cleansing balm. Cleanse once with the oil and then the balm and use a face cloth to take them off. Then use exfoliating toner. Nip and fab have toner pads for under €20. I saw them recommended here and so far I love them. Then use a serum preferably with hydrolauric acid (sp?). Lots of mainstream brands do this now but even aldi have it now for €9. Then get a good hydrating moisturiser. La Roche Posay do some great ones or look at Loreal or Olay. You don't need to break the bank but look for ones for 40-50 age skin. You might need one with intense hydration especially as it's winter and central heating etc will dry our skin out even more.

In the morning use a cleansing milk or cream with a face cloth. Never use foams. A little ordinary toner (Loreal vitamin c one) A good day serum (Olay, Loreal etc do budget friendly ones) and a day moisturiser again LRP, Vichy, Olay, Loreal.

Unfortunately at 42 your skin is screaming at you to stop what you're doing.

For weekly treatments, boots botanicals do a clay mask which beats all the luxury brands in tests. Use it once or twice a week. I've been reading that elave have a chemical exfoliating cleanser with 12% glycolic acid which could be used once a week.

I'm 40 and I've only learned all this recently as I developed roseacea (sp?) from my first pregnancy so I've had awful skin problems in the last year. This type of regime has helped me so much and my skin is so much better now

I love Caroline Hiron so check out her website. You mightn't agree with a lot of what she says or find the products she likes are too expensive but you'll learn a lot in general about skincare

I've been using the Elemis Mattifying Moisturiser:

    http://www.lookfantastic.com/elemis-fresh-skin-clear-matifying-moisturiser/10798702.html

I picked it up in TK Maxx - I have the same problems as you and I find this helps with keeping my makeup on as well during the day. I often use a different moisturizer on my forehead and cheeks though.

The Avene Cleanance range is also good for really oily skin but its really strong - I just dab a bit of this moisturiser on my nose maybe once a week - its way harsher than LRP though so feel its too drying for daily use.

PS I had a Clarisonic for a year until it broke - have to say it didn't help hugely with my skin - had really hoped it would be the answer to all my problems.

The indeed labs powder exfoliator or the Dermalogica micro exfoliant are great for gently exfoliating.

Thanks for the reply but I don't think you're right. .. The reason I started using Effaclar etc was because I had an 'all natural' & gentle regime for most of my life up to that point (oil or hand made soap cleansers, organic cider vinegar or rose water toner & coconut oil or organic vit. e oil moisturiser!) but my skin was just getting worse & worse AFTER I hit around 37/38... I still get a lot of compliments on my skin & most people think I'm in my early 30's rather than 40's!!

Effaclar etc actually really helped & cleared up a lot of the problems! by the way the Effaclar foaming face gel is actually for oily & sensitive skin!

the biggest problem I now have really is just finding a moisturiser that will be moisturising but not clog my pores & cause blackheads!

I was in boots yesterday & after a loooooooong time of looking at almost every product & then looking at reviews online I thought I'd try the Botanics Mattifying moisturiser with Willow Bark (sallycilic acid...)... i also decided to try their foaming face wash as my LRP Effaclar has run out!
they were both half price so worth a try i reckon.... used them last night & really liked them so far!!

I had a look at the Aldi serums & creams but didn't like them as they are so perfumed. .. I can't use anything heavily perfumed as i am very sensitive... gives me a migraine!

I wonder if you are using too much moisturiser and that why your pores are blocked?

ipink, I have to disagree with you on the effaclar foaming wash and from what you described it seems your skin disagrees with you too. As far as I know it's for acne skin which is why it doesn't work well for people with sensitive skin

Putting any moisturiser over a dry, flaky, sensitised skin will do nothing for the underlying problems.

Cleansing first, then exfoliating and then hydrating serums. You can put any moisturiser on top of that but it's a classic mistake to think black heads and clogged pores will be solved by moisturiser.

Thanks for your input & I'm glad that regime is working for YOU but I said before. ..

The problem actually started way before I started using the LRP Effaclar which went a long way towards helping the problem clear up!!

This is taken directly from the package-
'La Roche-Posay Effaclar Purifying Foaming Gel For Oily Sensitive Skin'
so I'd say it is fairly safe to assume that it actually IS for oily & sensitive skin!!

The problem for me IS the moisturiser I use as I have had almost 42 years of observing my own skin's reaction to different products! I know that I have to avoid anything with oil in it... which really sucks for me as all I really want to use in my face is coconut oil!!

I'm on day 2 now of using the Botanics moisturiser (& cleanser!)... skin feels & looks great!!
No break outs or clogged pores (for now anyway!) yay!!
even seems to be working on the ezama (or psoriasis?!) patches around base of my nose... Haven't had to use any cortisone cream on them in 2 days!!
