I think that it's a mad idea, but it can be done. But there are a couple of hurdles. For one, if you are, you're better off reinstalling Windows 7 on the new disk. This will mean backing up all of your data, (music, photos, etc) and moving it to the new disk when windows is installed.

For me, if I was upgrading the hard disk, I would buy a 256GB SSD and pop it in. The disk should cost 100ish quid, and it will make any machine lightning fast. No joke, even on such an old machine. It will turn on in 15 seconds flat, applications will open immediately, and it will be just a whole new computer.

Also, you would be able to take the disk out when you move to a new laptop and pop it in. Definitely worth considering. It will give you an extra 150~GB, whether that's enough I just dont know.

I've been eying this up for a long while:

    http://www.amazon.co.uk/Crucial-CT256MX100SSD1-256GB-Includes-Spacer/dp/B00KFAGCWK/ref=pd_rhf_gw_p_img_11

Things to note before going ahead...do you have a Window 7 disc, or install files? That's is the first and biggest hurdle. Second, do you have a USB hard disk, or stick to copy your files to before upgrading? Just make sure your clear of your plan before buying anything is what I would say! As I said, it's handy enough to do, nothing to worry about, but good to have it clear in your own head!
