I had a look at 3 laptops today in my local PC World/Currys

Basically looking to get something to replace my ageing desktop for home use, nothing hectic like gaming, watch the odd movie from the hard drive or DVD drive and some office work.

    All 3 are Acer

    Aspire E5-511
    Pentium N3530
    8GB RAM/1TB HDD
    €470

    Aspire E5-551
    AMD A10-7300
    8GB RAM/1TB HDD
    €539

    Aspire E5-571
    i3-400SU
    4GB RAM/1TB HDD
    €429

I have to add an additional €140 to above cost for MS Office aswell, which ois pointing me towards the E5-571 as budget is about €500-600

Would 4GB RAM be sufficent for normal use or would I regret not paying the extra for the extra RAM down the road?

    Thanks

Much better spec Dell one for 499 on there site

    Core i5
    8gb ram
    1tb hdd

You can get 10% off when you join group scheme below

Go publicsector.groupscheme and choose RoI and register.

Search for Dell & click on VIP Club.

    Decent laptop for 450.

you will want the 8gb ram. Look for one with an SSD also if you can. i5 instead of i3 processor also as other poster says.

At that price range, and SSD with acceptable storage is a big ask in a laptop. I would avoid Acer anyway, have never found them to be built to last. I'm sure people do have them last years and years, but from my experience this is not the norm.

you don't really have to worry too much about ram, 4gb is more than suitable your needs. nothing stopping you in a few months time, upgrading the ram. very easy to do. most laptops have a section that you can open to get access to the ram, without dismantling the lot. crucial even do a system scan to choose the correct ram type for your system. all very easy. so it's not something to worry about too much. it's not gonna make your laptop obsolete. stay well away from the pentium though.

    thanks for feedback
I run a Dell thro work for yrs (Core i5) and apart from the odd key sticking, they are very solid, but they are obviously a higher model in their range
had a look online at reviews at the Dell 15-3000 and it gets average reviews
I know I shouldnt expect much in this budget, but would like to at least get something that feels a bit solid
    The Acers seemed solid enough
I had considered some of the HP Pavilions only to also read that HP laptops are probably the most common to have issues with and they come preloaded with loads of useless software

would appreciate any other recommendations if you have any

Will stay away from the Pentium

    What about the AMD A10-7300?

    Thanks
