The return of Nokia

It appears that Nokia have been hinting at a potential return to the the consumer electronics market, first with an Android tablet in the form of the N1.

Later there are rumours that they might release a phone at some stage, most likely after what ever non-compete clause with Microsoft has expired. Actually it is a little surprising that Microsoft did not include tablets in the non-compete clause. I guess Nokia had not release a tablet to date, so no need to.

Personally I am excited to see if Nokia can deliver this time, in the smartphone / tablet sector. I always thought that they should have either adopted or forked Android years ago and gone that route instead of eventually trying it the Microsoft way.

This time around they will not be building the devices, instead licensing their brand name and working in partnership with other companies. The N1 tablet is made by Foxcon. Released first in China for $249 + taxes.

The Z launcher looks interesting, you type a letter on screen to bring up a list of the apps beginning with that letter.

    Interesting times ahead, I hope!

One thing pointed out about the video and press shots, no Google apps in sight.

Still curious to see the real Nokia get back in the game

The price point seems decent. The specs not bad either, although I haven't seen the all the specs. SD card and decent screen quality and I will really start to take notice of this. Tesco hudl 2 still the one to beat at this price point.

No SD card so. Still at least they are being generous with the 32 GB storage. Let's hope it's decent when we get our hands on it.

Its basically an iPad Mini Retina clone made by Foxconn (who make iPhones, iPads) with a Nokia skin thrown on top.
Nokia have licensed their name to Foxconn for this tablet.

Yep, although there's nothing wrong with that at all, the iPad mini is lovely to hold and the quality is excellent.

Sounds great! Much cheaper, and a nicer operating system. Win win.

My Nexus 7 2012 will probably need replacing in 2015, so I am very interested in this. This looks much cheaper than the Nexus 9 and iPad equivalent, so it goes to number 1 on my list as a contender. The chipset looks decent too for the price, and I'd expect it to out-perform the Snapdragon 805/Adrendo 335. Only annoyance is the lack of SD card slot, but 32GB should be enough for me.

Can the Google Apps be installed similar to the way they are install with CyanogenMod ROMs ?

This is basically just a Chinese tablet with amazing specs and Lollipop preinstalled using Nokia's moniker for attention and publicity.

I'm hopeful that the use of Intel chipsets might finally fix the biggest issue I have with Android in general; the absolutely terrible state of vendor released updates, and the inability to really install updated kernels (due to driver dependency, or bootloader signing). Intel have one of the better records of open source kernel drivers in the Linux world, and hopefully that transfers into this newer generation of really small devices.

There's good and bad news on that. The good news is that it sounds like the bootloader will be unlocked. The bad news is that the Intel Atom SOC uses PowerVR for graphics, and apparently no Linux drivers exists for it.

Apparently it will have Google Apps actually according to a source from Intel...my interest just grew a lot!

More than half the price of the Nexus 9, with similar specs. No brainer for anyone looking at a Nexus 9!
