A lot of the time my strava app will only record part of my journey. All location settings and GPS are on afaik. Is there anything else I should have on or off? I have the app on a Sony android phone.

If it occurs again comparing the remaining charge to the low battery mode threshold setting might give you a clue.
If battery power management stamina mode is set to on add Strava to apps active in standby and if low battery mode is set to on uncheck GPS off.
My Sony Experia E1 with android os has only failed to record once in about 20 spins and it seems to work ok in either front or rear jacket pockets when on the bike.

This is probably not the answer, but if Strava does not record segments at the beginning and end of your journey it could be the privacy settings.

If the privacy settings are on segments in the first 500m or 1km will be hidden depending on the settings chosen, or at least you won't see segments within 500m / 1km of home.

That is probably not your issue, but if you can't find segments at the beginning and end of your journey that could be it.

This was happening me and turned out to be my fault. I had a power saving function turned on that turned off GPS when the screen locked. Basically, once my screen closed after a time out period, I had no GPS signal.

I turned that feature off and no issues since.

In that scenario it is only one's performance on the segments within the privacy zone which won't be recorded - nothing to do with recording the ride.

My house lies beside a very popular segment and, as it falls within my privacy zone ,my performance there isn't recorded but 99.9% of my rides are recorded in full.
