Just been thinking about the time of year Hill Farmers wean their lambs.
We normally start lambing 1st of April and normally wean in August.

But I also find there is competition between lambs and ewes and am wondering of weaning earlier and give the lambs the best grass on the farm

When do other Hill farmers wean their lambs?

Mine is staggered. Lambing 1st april. To be honest i doubt there is anyone doing the same. I wean all x breed ram lambs end july. Normally mountain ram lambs through out august. X breed ewe lambs sept. And horned ewe lamb wait with the ewe until the ram goes out. Next year i think ill have the mountain ram lambs squeezed and leave them on the hill longer. Think they need till sept to develop. Especially when there not meal fed. Everyone is different. All depends on your lowland. Etc. I def dont do one weaning of lambs. Think about this. There is a big difference in a xbreed ram lamb born 1st april and twin horned lambs born 20th april.

I weaned mine in August this year and I don't think I'll be doing that again, September drought didn't help that. Will leave them on until September next year, all mine are ringed early (apart form the odd one I forget) so no issue with ram lambs.

I wean everything start of August. Allows ewes to build condition for mating. All ram lambs are grazed together with concentrates and ewe lambs return to the hill about 2 weeks later after the ewes have dried up and lambs not dependent on them.

We wean ram lambs in August, all ewe lambs go out the hill with their mothers until mid September and get weaned then.

I lamb from the 10th of April, wean around the 21st of August. Sell everything apart from replacements as stores second or third week of September.
