Recommend a threadless headset (and a bike to borrow until the weekend)

First things first, I heard the headset start to go a few days ago. I had planned to strip it down and clean it but life has gotten in the way. I found myself with 30 minutes to spare this evening so I decided, right. Knock it out, wipe, re grease, hope it's OK. Of course I knocked it out and dropped half the bearings and can't find them. I have decided just to get a new one rather than replacement ball bearings.

Any recommendations for a threadless, preferably fully sealed headset for a road/track bike?

Secondly my other bike is a work in progress. Flip of a coin between my OHs Peujeot piste town bike, about 6 cm to small or my daughters bright pink MTB.

I was thinking more along the lines of something that was a little cheaper than half the price of my bike. Anything wrong with FSA? Any mid level brands to be recommended?

I nearly have the other bike I got of you built up, got the wheels a fortnight ago, so will be putting it together this weekend. Thanks for the offer though. Something enjoyable about pottering along in a very upright position this morning.

My GT hybrid has an FSA headset and I've never had any issue with it,in fact I've completely forgotten its existence until now, never rebuilt it or anything.

I'm a big fan of the Chris King headsets, but as you said they're pricey. You get a good headset that lasts forever, but you're mainly paying premium for the name on the side. Though they can be transferred from bike to bike as you go along.

For cheap and cheerful I'd go for VP components, not the same quality as a king one,but not total garbage either. With the VP i'd imagine you have to keep an eye on the bearings so they don't get shagged,or put good grease in them before you even install it

Henri is doing nothing this weather if you want to borrow him? I'm gonna be single handed for at least another week?

Had an FSA on my charge and that lasted a solid few years of no maintainence, might look at them again.

My OHs bike is like a sunburnt relation of Henri. Thanks for the offer, I shall stick to him for the few days.

Decided on the FSA Orbit X, got it on sale from Planet X for 20euro delivered so will report back how it works out. It will of course take about a week before I have it. I think I will repair the MTB tonight to see how it feels on the commute.

I only just realised that the thread title sounds like I want a bike to borrow. Thanks to everyone for the offers, it should have actually read which bike should I borrow (my daughters or my wifes) sorry for the confusion.

Fitted the headset yesterday, no special tools, have to say, bike never felt this smooth when I first got it.

Easily done, there is a gap but according to google that is common with the Orbit X, might invest in a headset sleeve for my own comfort.
