Guy in work's brother was hauled over by the Guards last week and €20 depends on the answer to the following...
"John" got pulled over by traffic cops - he was overtaking a truck when the white line went continous as he was execting the overtaking, he would not have been familiar with the road, he completed the overtaking move as quickly as possible, there was no oncoming traffic, he checked the rear view mirror to check everything was ok behind him and saw the blue lights turn on. He started to look for somewhare to pull over immediately as he knew the lights were for him and he was going to get busted. Guard tapped at the window, asked if the driver was aware of what he'd just done etc etc. Driver made a sincere and contrite apology, tried weakly to explain what had happened, got cut short and got a bit of a bollicking, guard walks back to police car and both cars drive off!
Crux of the matter - what is going to happen John??? He wasnt told he should expect post, no driving lisence or insurance cert etc was examined. Not knowing what to expect is killing him - hasnt slept properly since!
The guy is bricking himself and there is even a (strong) suspicion that he may have had a wee on himself as the Guard was talking to him!!

He may have to wait six months or more for a summons to court.
Or he might get a fixed penalty notice in the post

John would surely be better ringing the local station and seeing if there's anything pending against him?

Sounds like he got away with it to me.
Did they take his details? Look at his licence?

Indeed, seems like the Garda was content with giving him just the bollicking.
He wasnt told he should expect post, no driving lisence or insurance cert etc was examined.

Id wait and see, my wife was stopped one night on her way back from a take away run.

Guard stopped her and had a word about her speed coming up the road, told her she was going a bit fast, she apologised and was honest and said im on my way home with hot food and wasn't sure of the limit etc etc, gave her no indication of what speed she was doing, looked at her license, commented on the nice smell of chips in the car, to which my wife offered him a few chips, which he took!! And 2 weeks later she received a fine in the post for doing 61 in a 50 zone.

Pretty funny but shows you what a shower of rats they can be.

My take here is that "John" was lucky enough to meet a representative of the law enforcement agency who clearly uses his head and proper judgement in the line of duty. What probably happened was that the Garda realized there was definitely a point in what "John" was saying (not being familiar with the road and the continuous line starting after he had initiated the maneuver), so decided to forego an official procedure. However, having stopped him, "John" was always due a bit of a lecture :)

Or, "John" might have his license suspended shortly :D
