messed up and all as we are in Ireland, I don't think any Irishman would do something like that even if he could

they probably don't have 'Ireland's Own' in Saudi

but why didn't he tell the poor girl before the ceremony?

in fairness he never set eyes on her before maybe one of the bridesmaids were more to his taste?

Guff about stuff, and stuff about guff.

Good ol Saudi. The oil can't run out soon enough.

After the divorce, the husband is obligated to provide financial support to his wife for a period of four months and ten days.

I wonder quite what the divorce rate here would be if we had similar arrangements

Because it was an arranged marriage.

As backward misogynistic etc as Saudi culture no doubt is to be fair to the guy this was an arranged marriage. They didn't see each other prior to the ceremony so there's no way that he could have told her prior to the wedding night. He'll no doubt be in serious trouble with his family over this but the alternative would have been a loveless marriage (even allowing for the lower chances of this type of union being properly happy anyway). It's a rotten culture but it can be hard for people to break out of. While he may be an asshole (though he did at least apologise according to the article) it's probably better to hate the game rather than the player as the saying goes.

They are both the victims of a disgusting and twisted custom.

They were offered a glance of each other before the ceremony and refused...idiots!

Can't blame either of their reactions really, I don't envy either of them.

Jaysus. Higher, obviously. As it stands here in Ireland, there is no guaranteed support. Would have been bloody great to have 3 months rent covered the time I had to leave with 2 kids under 10. Never got a penny maintenance, never looked for it. Whatcha onabout?

That's what happens when you refuse to take your one glance before getting married.

Maybe in he 19th century, or in Kerry.

I still don't see how this is relevant to irish men?

Irish laws were pretty effed up too; there was no law about raping your wife till 1994 I believe. So there are messed up laws everywhere at one time or another

Still, the entire idea of marrying someone you never met is really stupid; assuming you take marriage as meaning "I choose to spend the rest of my life with you".

The culture there seems pretty insane in some circumstances.

Why does a news story about what a saudi man did, suddenly become a ... Ah sure an Irishman would never do that if the same laws applied.... The simple answer is ofc he would... especially if he didnt like the look of her and it was the first time he saw her face unless ofc he was also facially dis-advantaged in that case then there would be no problems...
