    Looking to build a new set of wheels, carbon tubs on some hope rims..

    The spokes! for a long time I've looked at CX rays for their proven strength and light weight... only downside is their price.. €2.50 each on bike24

    any one have any alternatives, light weight is a factor.. either that or a better source for cx rays?

    Sapim Laser. Nearly as light, nearly as strong, more flexible, and much cheaper.

    Enjoy the tea and the nipples so :).
    I built my wheel set using Lasers on front and on non drive side rear. Just for the drive side rear I would recommend the Sapim Race spokes due to the higher tension required there.

    Laser and Race are a good combo for an everyday wheelset. Starbike.com do CXrays for €2.00 and are best for lower spoke count and radial front wheel. It's not advisable to put CX Ray on both sides of the rear as you may have tension problems on the non drive side but it depends on the hub and what you want to use it for. Campagnolo hubs are narrow and suffer the worst. They work if the non drive side is radial lacing but there's not a lot of off the shelf hubs that are drilled to suit

    Sapim CX Sprints are a higher tension version but are not that easy to get and are around €2.60 a piece retail. They are best for drive side with Cx Ray on non drive. These are really for race day wheels. Many of the factory wheels (Campagnolo, SRAM) have CX Ray and CX Sprints in straight pull form fitted.

    thanks for replies... sapim look like the ticket.. I see they have a 'super spoke', very light but hard to get..

    Will think about lasers, theres only a few grams in the difference.. also, never looked at different spokes for drive side, and I will... I picked up a spoke tensioner a number of years back so will get stuck in with that too..

    Slowly coming together...

    The Super spoke have tiny advantage over the Laser (at extra cost), so I would just stick with the Laser.

    Using Race (or equivalent) spokes on the drive side makes a lot of sense even during the building process. The drive side need a good bit higher tension and the Laser spokes are a lot harder to keep straight, as they are prone to twisting at higher tensions.
