Hi, I have an old Dell that I want to resurrect. The GFX card is dead (256MB NVIDIA GEFORCE 8600 GTS) and I'm looking for a cheap replacement. This won't be used for gaming, just home video editing.

Can anyone suggest a cheap replacement, or upgrade? Used is fine.

    Cheers.

(PCI express, standard PSU 350w - I think...)

A Radeon 5450/6450 or Nvidia GT210/GT610 or similar will suffice and shouldn't cost you more than about €25 new.

FYI I recently put 2 Radeon 5450 into 2 Dell Optiplex 740 recently and they worked fine. My nephew can play Minecraft on one. It gets a little choppy at times but then Minecraft isn't very well optimised.

These only had 280w power supplies so your 9200 will be fine for power.

Forgot to say, you might need a low profile face plate depending on the size of the 9200 case. I had to get them to fit in my Dells, got them from Komplett.

In terms of games, the 5450 is extremely low-end....actually, it's about bottom of the barrel you can get, even integrated video from the past few years is faster.

The Hd6450, it's successor, is actually far faster, and can be gotten very cheaply. Guy on adverts sells them for €15, got a few off him and they work grand, even got Bioshock Infinite, Alien Isolation and a few others running at 60fps at 800x600 low settings. Would blaze through minecraft, worth be worth looking into @lunacyfoundme

Cards are so efficient these days that a 280w power supply is capable of running a card that can run new games at 1080p high-ultra settings no problem, if it came to it. I've run a Gtx750Ti playing Battlefield 4 at high settings on a 220w PSU no issues.

Went with a 6450. Thanks for the suggestion. ;)

Really? That's an incredibly low power level. Didn't think I'd get away with anything higher than 5450. May look into that.

The 750ti is incredibly power efficient, the best of the recent generations. Max consumption under extreme load is a paltry 65 watts. 75 is pcie 2nd gen limitations so I'd back up terrors affirmations that 750ti should work fine.

I bought a 6450 with a low profile bracket, assuming I could pick up a standard one for a few quid, but haven't found one yet... Closest I have is on ebay at $9.99 + $7.99 post.

Any tips on where to get one? Cheers.
