A few weeks ago I bought a Lenovo A5500-F from Argos, no problems at all with it, its a great little machine.

However, I initially had no problems connecting to any WIFI connection but after a system upgrade to 4.4.2, it would connect to a specific connection but not open the authentication page to allow me to use the internet.

I have tried everything I could find on the subject, forgetting and reconnecting to the network, restarting the tablet, changing settings, using different browsers, I even did a factory reset and no luck.

Sometimes on connecting to different networks, I receive notifications that I have already received at home, this doesnt bother me at all because at least I can connect. The problem seems to be opening the authentication page, browsing to a random page does not bring it up either.

Its p-ing me off because I have to tether my phone to it which drains my battery! Thanks in advance..

Have you manually set DNS settings by any chance? For a SmartDNS service or anything?

It sounds similar to a problem I had with an old Motorola Defy Android.
The phone would only work on German WiFi Channels - 1-10
Whereas in Ireland you will find WiFi using Channels 1-13

Check your WiFi router and set it to Channel 6 and see how you get on.
