I was wondering if I could upholster bar stools using a normal sewing machine.

Should be no problem you may not even need a sewing machine unless you are joining material together. This is how I made some seats for my boat.

After cutting out the wood for it I then cut the foam about an inch bigger all round.

Then lay it out on the material and cut it a few inches bigger so you have enough room to fold it over and staple it in place.

i also made a bit of piping to hide the join but you may not need to do this.

Nice job Fergal, I remember my mother years ago used a standard domestic machine to make up new headlining and vinyl seat coverings for a vintage car project at home. Depends on the material though- I was making up tool rolls from medium weight canvas a couple of years ago and the machine I had struggled with the job.
