Forget the CD/DVD drive...they've gone the way of tape decks on cars. What is the laptop going to be used for? College?

No, its for a Santa present for 11 year old, and the dvd drive would be to install programmes on and watch dvds. I didnt think there would be any small ones with dvd drives, couldn't find any online just thought I'd ask. Would you recommend a small 10/11inch instead without a drive?

Netbooks dont have optical drives. 14"-ers and above can do. On that budget you're probably looking at a 15" unless you want a really weak unit.

Even that is becoming less true. Most machines you see these days do not have optical drives at all, even at 15".

The Dell inspiron 15 (ithink!) is around 220, and quite a nice machine by all accounts, however it will not be able to play many games (call of duty etc etc), but would be a good machine for the internet and light gaming.

Yeah, thats the inspiron 15 3238 or something along those lines. Bought one for the sister. No optical alright but it was a steal at 220. Back up to 280 now so you may as well jump up to an i3.
