Looking a new garmin. I've been wearing the 910xt triathlon watch for the past 2 years but I want to upgrade to a cycling only garmin (or other gps watch). I will be doing long miles so I need a good battery for a start and then all the usual miles/hr/cadence etc. What's the best one to go for then lads?

Garmin 500 would do all you need.

    500 is what I'd recommend

I would very rarely if ever need to use maps. I am going to tenerife in April but other than that i can't see when i would ever need a map on the bike.

I had a 705 for a while and changed to a 500. The 500 has a much longer battery life. I got 18 hours while running a preloaded route , so without doing that you'd probably get more.

I agree, the map function is rarely useful.

Thinking of getting the 510 myself , would love to hear if anyone cannot do without the map functionality of the 810.

Also, is there any device that would have a shadow functionality where you could measure your progress against a previous effort? Think the 510 has an average speed version which isn't exactly what I would like.

^^ Can't you download a previous effort into the Garmin 500 and it will act as a virtual partner. I know that when I download courses it says whther I am ahead or behind schedule. How the schedule is arrived at I'm not sure though, I don't really pay attention to it tbh

You save your first ride as a course on the Edge 500.

Then on the second go, instead of just pressing start, you page through to Training and Courses. Then you have 'virtual partner', that you race on the screen. It will constantly monitor whether you are behind or ahead.

    Is this what you mean?

I find the Map function useful when abroad. I don't really use it in Ireland though. I tend to create routes on Strava, then copy them to my Garmin and follow those routes when abroad.

Wasn't there a thread a while back on how the 500/800 were actually better than the newer 510/810?

I have the 800 and use the maps all the time, hasn't failed me in the 2 years I've had it.
Yes you can see where you are against your previous times (on same routes) in the form of virtual partner. This is from an edge 800, I think the 500 lacks the image but still gives you the info
