My winter bike is 9spd Tiagra and I'm upgrading (slightly) to 10spd Tiagra. I have the shifters (I only need to change the Leighton hand shifter) and will buy a 10spd Tiagra RD and cassette in the coming days. My bike came fitted with a Truativ Elite 10spd chainset and a KMC chain (not sure if it's 9 or 10spd though) so I'm wondering if I need to change the chain, ie if it's a 9spd chain will I run into problems with the 10spd RD or cassette

Update: it's a 9spd chain so I'm guessing I'll have to buy a 10spd chain to work properly with a 10spd RD and cassette.

Also will I need to change the front mech to a 10spd? Can't imagine why but maybe with a narrower chain I'll need a narrower mech too?

I did something similar last year (campag xenon/veloce mix), and initially kept the same front and rear mechs with no issues. New chain, shifters, and cassette was all.

But if i leave the rear mech and change the shifters to 10 speed, will the rear mech allow 10 gear changes or only 9? It would be great if i didnt have to change the RD as that would mean only changing the chain, cassette and right shifter!

Once you change the shifters to 10speed, the rear mech should be fine.
As for the 9sp chain, why not just try it? if the chain doesn't work..then buy a 10 speed chain? My guess is it will work

AFAIK, there's no issue here. The rear mech simply has to have enough range to cover the width of the cassette. The indexing of individual sprockets happens in the shifter. You may need to adjust the limits on the rear mech and will certainly have adjust the indexing for 10 speed.

Ok thanks for that. From googling it seems I will have to change chains but considering there is 0.15mm width difference in a 9 and 10spd I may just try with the 9spd first

Rear derailleur is fine, do not buy a new one, have done this myself.

The chain should be 10speed but if you are getting a new cassette, I would recommend a new chain anyway. SRAM 10 speeds are on sale quite regularly from CRC and IMO are very good quality.

I think I'll go with KMC and a12/28 Tiagra cassette. Thanks for the advice.
