2014 News - Flights - MONARCH FINALISES ORDER FOR BOEING 737 MAX 8S

31 October 2014, Luton, UK – Monarch Airlines today announces the confirmation of a narrow body fleet order with Boeing for a new generation fleet of 30 737 MAX 8s, worth more than $3.2 billion at current list prices. The order, originally announced at the Farnborough International Airshow in July, includes options for 15 additional 737 MAX 8s and marks the beginning of Monarch’s transition to an all-Boeing single-aisle fleet.

Apparently Monarch are next for the chop. They're being replaced by A330s I presume?

Well hopefully not. Their staff have taken lots of redundancies amid a big restructure. New owners now in place.

Did Monarch buy these second hand originally?

EDIT. They took delivery of their first 757 in 1983. The only Monarch 757 I flew on would be a lot older than 21.

1983 is 31 years ago and it's also the year the 757 entered service. So Monarch would have gotten them new.

Im a bit confused with this. Why are they saying 21 years in service, when they were introduced in the 80s. The only aircraft referenced for the 90s are from Airbus.

There's always been something really special about Monarch to me personally. My first ever flight was onboard a Monarch Summer charter on the 757 from Dublin to Faro around 1998 if I can remember. So sad to see these beauties retire, they've always done Monarch well and unfortunately, especially after new owners - cost wins. I'm really concerned with there new owners Greybull. This same group was nearly single handily responsible for the failure of Spanish airline Comet. Monarch is to me part of that great British airline culture, similar to the then Britannia (Now Thomson).

Never a dull moment in aviation. :(

Funnily enough my neighbour used to work for them in Dublin, great times apparently, they're now at the HQ here in Luton but sadly not sure how long.

First and only 757 I flew on was their 757, ever since then I've always loved them.

My first flight on one was from ORK to EMA for a Munster v Leicester Heineken cup match.
