Laptop fan going to high speed, then shutting down. (no dust or dirt in fan)

My laptop fan seems to be possessed.

It will randomly go into overdrive, and the laptop will just power off.

This has even happened in the BIOS menu when I'm just having a look around.

Checked CPU temp with a few different apps - never goes over 70C.

Swapped around RAM sticks in case it's dodgy ram. No difference.

    Happens in safe mode too.

    Any ideas?

What other checks can I do?

It's pretty old - Dell D531. Probably about 6 or 7 years old.

Run Prime95 then watch the temps. If the fan is speeding up it usually means a heat issue.

Fan could also be failing at that age. Maybe replace it, few quids worth.

Just a shot in the dark but my fix is usually to reinstall the operating system. I work on computers on the side and it has never failed in the end. Never really saw any hardware
issues though. Since it does this in bios, don't really know. There could be a bios update that states an issue with this happening if you look at the manufacturers driver support. And a bios update may fix it?

Bios is updated to most recent version.

The problem is I dont have much of a chance to do anything once I boot into windows. Fan starts running full speed as I log on. Then a minute or so later it shuts down.

Faulty fan is what I'm thinking. But before I go to the hassle of replacing the fan I just wanted to check here if there is any way of finding out what's going on.

Reinstalling the operating system won't fix it. It's nothing to do with windows as I booted into Linux and the same thing happened.

Also, when it shuts down, CPU is at 1%. There's no activity. Just the fan going full speed.
