I have a 2001 TT and need the timing belt done. I believe this is a pretty big job. I have a local guy who says he can do it - I think he said it would be about €450, but is this the type of thing I should get a main dealer to do? Any other offers around?

When i still had the S3 i was quoted around 350 by George Dalton, same engine and same set up. I think you'd be mad to bring it to a main dealer.

Heard an ad on the radio today about fixed price timing belt jobs at Audi main dealers and it was about the €450 mark I recall. If that's the kind of money the local Indy is charging, I'd sooner bring it to Audi and get a stamp in the book for resale time.

    Not necessarily.

I got my timing belt/water pump done on my Skoda Octavia vRS (same engine as the TT) by Monaghans Skoda main dealers in Galway for only €349.

Independents were charging more for it.

I got my timing belt (audi 1.8T) done in http://www.carmaintenance.ie/ for 350euro a short while ago. Just off the belgard road. Got mad quotes going as high as 650euro from some indi's.

Make sure whoever you are quoting from are for the full kit, waterpump, belts and tensioners etc. Audi in Sandyford wanted and extra 50e for the pump.

    If it's a 180 TT yeah it's the same.

My objection to main dealers isn't entirely based on price either BTW.

Thanks guys, mine is the 225 so hopefully that does not make it any more.
How much are the parts and how much is the labour, roughly?

The parts are the same on the 180 and the 225 but the TT is slightly more awkward to do than the Octavia. We do the Octavias for €320 but a TT or an S3 is €350. That breaks down as roughly €180 for parts (belt kit, water pump, coolant and auxiliary drive belt, genuine Audi) and €170 for labour.

Hard to argue with those prices!
