Hi folks, I have had a long ongoing issue with my Alienware m17x laptop crashing while gaming, after 2 years and pure chance i've found that using a lower wattage power supply for a m14x dosent trigger it, so i'm no longer crashing which is amazing, BUT as its not the correct power supply the laptop runs as if its on battery power and doesn't charge... so my assumption is that its either the batterys fault or the power supply!

long story short, I need a new 240W power supply compatible with my m17x, where would you get one bricks and mortar or online?

amazon have them for about e75 but wont deliver a charger to ireland for some reason, ebay just seems so dodgy as they all look like knock offs from hong kong...

    any ideas?

Have a suspicion as to whats happening there. Laptops underclock when off mains power as running at 100% would give poor battery life. When you were gaming at max power the laptop cooling couldnt handle it but now you're gaming with an insufficient DC supply its running at the battery clocks and thus is slower but cooler, thus no overheating.

Really, you should resolve the heat issues if possible, not work around them. Most likely you're losing FPS doing it that way.

Use parcel motel to order from amazon with UK delivery, costs €4 and they'll deliver it to your local spar etc.

I had always assumed it was an over-heating issue but having cleaned out the fans and re-pasted both the CPU and GPU i've been monitoring the temps and it can cut out within 10 seconds of loading to desktop and then crashing with no temp above 60...

I was really hoping it was the power supply, that's alot cheaper to replace than a GPU...

If youve done that the main components should be safe, be careful there isnt a "hot spot" on the board though. Have many other users reported heat issues with them?

I suppose it could be a dud PSU, but if you can empty the battery then charge it while using it with the original charger and it doesnt crash then it points more to heat than that as its specifically when gaming.
