    Hi Guys,

If you are going to give cyclocross a try on a mountain bike what type of tyre would be typically recommended ?

Presume a slick wouldn't have quite enough grip and a beady tyre unnecessarily slow.

One with smaller knobbles. Defo not slick, or semi slick, or anything approaching slick.

In fact, just race with whatever knobblies you have.

or semi slick, or anything approaching slick.

At least tomorrow :) I guess Grange castle would have been fine on semi slicks.

    Probably you are right, actually.

This dude won the B race. They look like file treads or summat.

Any specific recommendations guys ? I'm sure there is something a bit quicker than Schwalbe Sam Smart 2.1 inch which is currently on the bike:

Ideally was hoping somebody reading this had researched the same thing and come with something definite. Looking at photos I haven't seen too many 2.1 inch tyres on CX bikes.

the CX B race was won by a guy on a 26er with some big Specialized knobbly tyres today, so don't think it's so important as the rider! ;)

Generally though, a good open thread tire to shed the mud and not be too draggy on any tarmac sections:

something like a Racing Ralph or a Rocket Ron from Schwalbe would probably do a good job, they're a XC tyre so the tread is shallow and rolls fast, lots the lugs on the sides are bigger so you've a bit more grip when cornering.

My personal preference is for tyres wider than 2.2,especially on the front, back it doesn't make a difference as much, had a specialized ground control in 2.1 on the rear for ages, and it was fine as a trail tyre and in the wet, muddy grass but they were hard to get again so i went for schwalbe in 2.3s and I kind of prefer it for no particular reason
