I'm doing court reports from newspaper articles. one section is asking for the legislation relevant to each case - i have a fair idea but not exact legislation - just wondering what online sources i can use to find it. (like a searchable database?)

    Thanks (sorry for all Q's)

If you're working for a publication, perhaps you might suggest that they acquire a more comprehensive reference source for you to use, such as Criminal legislation in Ireland (Bloomsbury) 2nd ed 2014.

The Statute Book website is messy and of limited utility, in the sense that our criminal law has been substantially amended and, in many cases, not codified at all. A textbook would provide a more rounded view, as well as annotating the criminal law, and might be better able to put order on Irish criminal law until such time as the Oireachtas actually get around to establishing a modern criminal code appropriate to the 21st century.

I find www.irishstatutebook.ie a very good source with easy links to amendments.

I find www.irishstatutebook.ie a very good source with easy links to amendments.

It doesn't easily show repealed laws though, or if the law is in force.

While it does not show it easily, it does show it, a little bit of work and away you go.

OP if you can expense a westlaw.ie subscription you'll get some consolidated legislation. +1 on the Statute Book though it's not perfect but it is free.

Finding the amendments is not the problem. But jumping from tab to tab to consolidate acts is messy. And lets not even start on SIs.

There's actually no good excuse for that kind of mess. They really could clean it up fairly easily.

I agree, but in my opinion it's the best free resource available. It's free, searchable and online.

Also, the way it's done allows users to see what the law has been at various points in time since enactment. Another, cleaner system may lose that and it's fundamental to us to know what the law was on or about the n day of m 20xx rather than what it is today.

    Very true.
