I have just had a new kitchen fitted with a beech worktop. It has been oiled and looks fine, but there are a few patches that feel slightly rough. Would it be ok to sand with fine sandpaper (or wire wool) and oil again - it has to be oiled again anyway. I'm wondering about sanding it now it is oiled.

Should be fine, if you really don't mind doing the whole worktop again. The problem with doing patches is that you might find that they stand out a mile in the future.

If you've already sanded it yourself, you know what it's like as a job, if it's come from a supplier already sanded, don't underestimate the job!

if it's ow - ask the company to call out and re-sand it.
see how it's done for future.

Better off being safe the first time round.

Thank you for your replies. It was installed, sanded and oiled by the fitter. I just feel I could get a better finish with a bit of patience.

I have sanded things before, fine sanding between coats of varnish for example, sanding with the grain etc. I would like to do it myself, I think it only requires very light sanding, possibly a couple of times with very fine sandpaper. Yes I would do the whole thing, while it is new and empty it is not a big deal. I was concerned about sanding after coats of oil, and now I think of it, what I would use to remove the dust, probably just a dry cloth as it is not, for example, going to get dust embedded in varnish. I am probably worrying unnecessarily, I love the feel of really satin smooth wood, but I have very limited experience of oiled surfaces.

Edit: I had searched on the net for instructions and had not found anything useful. Another search just now produced this very detailed guide: http://danish-oil.com/how-to-apply-danish-oil/ :D
