Shaving advice?

    Hey guys,

I grow a rather thick beard and for last 10 years never had to be clean shaven. Just used an electric one that would trim down to 1mm every month or so.

Now, with a new job, I need to be clean shaven. But I cant do it.

I end up with about 20 shaving cuts and then look ridiculous.

    My question/advice....

    should I get
    1. fusion or other type of normal razor
    2. one on those razors with double sided blade
    3. electric razor

Basically, whats the best method of shaving? So what do you think is the best option and could you please make a recommendation.

    Thanks alot

    A double-edge razor.

    There's plenty choice out there, I bought this one as a starter razor and I'm still using it 2.5 years later;

    Edwin Jagger DE89

    You'll find a lot more advice on this forum;

    Facial Hair & Hats

Could mods move to facial hair and hats please?

I second the Edwin Jagger DE89. I have had this razor for a few years now and the money you save compared to the fusion razors. I also highly recommend the website shaving.ie. Never had any problem ordering stuff online from them, great prices and quick delivery!

OP, have a look at Mantic59's channel on YouTube.

If you have any particular questions re shaving just ask.

I found the best razor I used was the old Gilette excel. But the blades all disappeared from the shop. So I switched to Edwin Jagger DE89, which I love. I dont get cuts that much compared to the excel. Sometimes with a dodgy blade I might get a few cuts. Other than that its amazing razor

You can still pick up the Sensor range of blades. They are not as easily found as Gillette pushes the fusion range. Price has also increased. Amazon UK, Boots and Tesco stock them.
There twin blade, treble blade and an excel versions. If I need to use a cartridge razor I'll always reach for a Sensor and ideally the original twin blade and basic cartridge.

looked at his vids, so I'm now ready to give this type of shaving a go.

    Questions:
    1. Is this the generally accepted best form of shaving?
    2. can I get a starter kit for e50? razor, blades, brush and lather? and if so can someone recommend the various things to order please?

was gonna go with the Edwin Jagger Barley DE89 for e32, leaving e18 for everything else. is that possible?

Thanks a lot for all the feedback.

I used to buy them off amazon. But I was pissed when you would get down to the last blade and have to order some more online. Less and less Tesco & Boots are stocking them anymore. But they will have safety razor blades in stock

Maybe try a starter pack of different blades.
I'm using DE a year and only use disposables when flying with hand luggage.
    Best move I made.

    Shaving oil works wonders.

Take a set of sample blades. It may help you to choose the right blade that suits you.

Plenty there to get you started but hold off on the feathers for now.
They're a great blade but unforgiving if your technique isn't perfect.
For now try a sample pack as mentioned above
    http://www.shaving.ie/products/two-of-a-kind-de-blade-sample-pack.html

Post back on what blades from samples you liked and people can recommend similar.

Add a styptic pencil to your order as well.

OK, so I went ahead and ordered. Changed the blades for the selection box and added the styptic pen. Couldn't afford to add in the oil but I will get some later on - depending on how things are going.

Any recommendations on what blade to use 1st, or just pick and choose?

Thanks again. Really excited to try this method of shaving :D

I'd start with the Red Personna.

Give yourself time with your first DE shave. Don't wait until a hungover Monday morn when you're racing out the door. My advice would be to take some time in the evening. Have a hot shower first to soften the stubble.

    No need for shaving oil.

Go to this site http://www.shaving101.com/index.php/education/double-edge-shaving/48-choosing-the-right-blade.html. You can see the grades of sharpness of various blades. Go with the least sharpness first. Once you are confident, move to the blade that is next higher in sharpness. Enjoy!

Sorry chief. I dont have any recommendations. I only use an electric razor for trimming, not a close shave. Someone else may have some better advice for you.

After getting my things in the post and had my 1st shave. I can already tell how much better these are than Gillette or other normal razors. Only problem was the angle of attack with the razor but I'll learn that soon enough.

    Few questions:

    1. What do you do with razor after shaving? Do you take out blade and clean it? Where to leave overnight?
    2. Do you leave the brush sitting in water overnight?

    Thanks

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,924 ✭✭✭hitemfrank

I just leave the blade in the razor. There is no need to be taking a wet razor blade out of the razor and chancing cutting yourself. Just give it a rinse once you're finished and leave it somewhere to dry.

Don't leave the brush in water overnight. Just give that a rinse, a quick shake dry and leave it somewhere with good airflow so that it will dry out.

It's a learning curve. You would soon master it.

I'm afraid different school with different thought. Myself dismantle the blade and razor; wash them (careful with the blade); wipe the razor with the towel and blade carefully with tissue. I let the razor and blade dry in a safe place overnight.

Let the brush dry upside down off the water overnight. For that you need to purchase a brush holder that roughly costs you 4 quids.

    Couple more remedial questions lads....

    1. does it matter what way you put in the blade? Is there a top and bottom?
    2. can you switch the blade around to prolong its life?
    3. generally how many shaves would you get from a blade. There are probably to many variables here to give an accurate answer.

    Thanks very much.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,924 ✭✭✭hitemfrank

    1) There is no up or down to the blade.
    2) Switching the blade around wont have any effect on how long it will last.
    3) Too many variables really. I may get 7 shaves from a blade while the someone else may only get 4 before it's not comfortable for them. Usually I change the blade after a maximum of 5 shaves even if still feels fine to use. The blades are cheap and I have hundreds of them.

In this instance does a shave = a pass? Or does 5 shaves = 5 days

    thanks

With a DE you aim to do a few passes per shave, reducing the stubble a bit more with each one. I normally do 3 passes for a shave with a DE. First pass with the grain, second across and third against.

    5 shaves = 5 days.
