    hi there,

I am travelling to the US tomorrow on US Airways. It is my first time to make it across the Atlantic and I am hearing different stories as regards food I can bring onboard. I am not a lover of airline food generally & was hoping to bring my own sambo & a little salad in a plastic bowl. Is this allowed onboard?

    Tnx,

    Valc

Yes it is. Just watch out for things that may not seem like liquids (e.g. jam) but are classed as such.

There was a thread about this recently. Certain meat, fruit and vegetables are not allowed past US Customs at the airport- even though you may plan on eating it on the flight, as far as they are concerned it could be brought into America and spread disease!

You will have to declare what food you have when clearing Customs/Immigration and they will either let you keep it or not.

    yep :)

As highlydebased said I'd also avoid meat. Though you plan on eating it all from customs point of view it's things that you want to import into the USA.

edit : Probably the easiest way is to buy a sandwich once you are past security. They'll be expensive and may not taste as good but you avoid all the issues with customs.

I would eat a decent feed in the airport before flying and that would sort you for the trip.

Travellers to the US are forbidden to bring most unpackaged fruit, veg or meat and that includes on to a plane destined for the US since they won't accept your assurances that you will consume the food onboard. It was suggested on a different thread that you could maybe bring bread and a (vacuum packed) packet of ham slices and make your own sandwiches as soon as you got past the pre-clearance people, this was a poster with fussy children who wanted to bring her own sandwiches onboard. I wouldn't try bringing home-made sandwiches or salads because any meat or veg will cause them to fail and be confiscated by being dumped in the bins they have there for the purpose. Even a healthy whole orange is not allowed.

Depends on what is in the sambo. Meat and & fruit & veg products are a no no. Cheese on its own would be ok, ham (or any other kind of meat) and cheese would not.

A salad is a definite no, as the vegetables could contain pest/diseases that could be harmful if introduced into the US ecosystem.

Once you clear US Customs & Immigration at Dublin airport, you are technically on US soil, even though physically you are still in Ireland. So all the same food importation rules apply, as if you were physically at an airport in the US. There is no distinction made between what you are allowed bring onto the plane and eat there, versus what you can bring into the US. Once you are on the plane, you are already in the US, in their eyes.
