7 month tax period on used car.

I'm looking at buying a 2011 used car privately
So far all the boxes are ticked, however, cartell has flagged that the last tax period was 7 months.
The seller has said it was never off the road but it's possible he lapsed a month and paid arrears.

    Is this possible?

I thought it was changed so you pay arrears but you only get the original tax period again? i.e the last expiry was June this year so six months tax would bring it to December.
The car is currently taxed till Jan.

    Should I be worried?
Apart from this I can't fault the car or it's history.

    Cheers.

The new system actually adds the arrears on to the period you are paying tax for.

My Passat is a 2003 and I had a months arrears so I had to pay 257.30 to tax it for 3 months (190+67.30 as indicated on the motor tax website).

you only tax it from date of sale as new owner, not liable for past tax.

I think the car is taxed but it is coming up on the cartell site as after having 7 months tax put on it in June and the OP is wondering if its possible.

My opinion is that if they can charge monthly arrears (€67.30 for my 1.9 tax) then people should have the option of taxing a car from anywhere between 1-12 months and not the 3,6 or 12 months we have now.

    Yeah, exactly this.

If it's currently the case you pay the arrears and the new period begins from when you pay then I'd be happy.
The seller sent me a pic of the current disc, it was issued in Aug 2014, the previous one expired in Jun 2014.

Just to add, the only thing I can find on motortax.ie is this (which doesn't really say either way when the new period begins):
6Q. How long after my renewal date will I be able to tax my vehicle online?
6A. One month after your renewal date, motor tax arrears will become due on your vehicle. Arrears on this site cannot be paid in isolation - the renewal amount must also be paid. This site facilitates the payment of up to three months arrears, after which time your PIN will become inactive and your motor tax transaction must be completed through your local motor tax office. In such circumstances owners are required to complete form RF100A and forward it to your local motor tax office. Motor Tax Office contact details can be got on our homepage under the link 'Motor Tax Office Details'.

Yeah the whole change wasn't and still isn't made clear anywhere. I only found out when I was taxing the car after having built up a months arrears, I presumed I was only going to be able to tax it for the 3 month period as before but I had to then pay the extra months tax at the same time.

I wouldn't worry about this. So long as it's taxed now that's all that matters. (must have been 6 months tax plus one month arrears( or three months and 4 months arrears maybe
