Generally that standard of course it is go direct to them. Before you book make sure what is in play lots of temp greens tees and no play off the fairway this time of year.

Lots of the top courses take the fairways out for the winter. Put a line down the middle of the fariway and you have to drop in the first cut either side. It's not too bad, better than carrying around those mats you see in Scotland.

To protect the course and give it time to recover.

They are, for courses that actually need the business. Those two courses are elite.

Try Portmarnock links, the greens will be as good and you can play
On bulletproof links land after weeks of rain.
What do St Anne's and The Island do in winter anyone know?

Not sure about what they do over the winter but if anyone is looking for a good links in Dublin at affordable rates, St Anne's were running opens @ €20 throughout the summer.

RCD is £50 Mon, Tues, Thurs & Fri before 11.20. 9 fairways are out of play due to the Irish open in May dropping in semi rough.

The island is bring a Mat or play from the semi rough think Baltray are off mats as well. European is always full fairways reason is there are no members so course is quite during the winter.

You can get Royal Dublin next Monday or Tuesday morning for €55 on Golfnow.ie.

Only 1 tee time at this rate, part of their Hot deals

I think playing courses with the restrictions ye point out is a false economy, prefer to bite the bullet and play it full on...

Depends how many fairways you normally hit ;)
It'd be a killer to wait until the summer, pay full whack, have the heavens open up and only find a couple of fairways :)

Joking aside, I would agree, but in some instances I'd be happy to go the winter mat/rough route and avail of the cheaper fee. I would play Royal Dublin in winter but I'd wait and pay full rate for County Down.
(Mainly because Dublin would be down on my list of premium courses to play)
