Media manipulation of live speeches

    Hi folks,

I was listening to the radio last night and i heard a speech from someone in the Dail. At the time i thought nothing really of it only that it sounded really polished and was thinking it was written by a good political speech writer.

The radio bulletin sounded like a one sized vocal paragraph with no stoppages in between.

I got home and then watched RTE news and heard a speech from the same person and thought to myself that the speech was different on the radio.

I went and downloaded the podcast of the Radio news bulletin and i couldnt believe what i was heard when I listened to it back.

Basically what happened was the Radio speech was edited to make it sound like the person said all these things in one paragraph segment. In essence the speech was re written to make the speech (in my opinion) sound a lot more damning than it was.

Below are pieces and the transcript from the Dail.

*** I dont want to turn this into a tit for tat regarding the people involved as or the topic *** I want to show an example of media changing 'news' report.

    Radio news bulletin - http://clyp.it/xyhgcq5p

radio news bulletin transcript from clip above..
republicans who thought so much of this Republic that they would honour us with their rapists, gift us their child abusers, their rejects and their ejects, their undesirables and their exiles could live with and even prey on our women and children. We do not know who these men are. We do not know what they have done since they arrived among us in their banishment but we need to know and we need to find out.

Actual RTE six one news rip - http://clyp.it/shbg3eu0

    Dail transcript of speech -
I refer to republicans who thought so much of this Republic that they would honour us with their rapists and gift us their child abusers. Under that elite, so-called republican dispensation, Northern Ireland could be scoured, secured and sanctified while down here and incognito, their rejects and their ejects, their undesirables and their exiles could live with and even prey on our women and children. We do not know who these men are. We do not know what they have done since they arrived among us in their banishment but we need to know and we need to find out.

and a link to the Dail record -

    http://oireachtasdebates.oireachtas.ie/debates%20authoring/debateswebpack.nsf/takes/dail2014111200030?opendocument

I was a bit shocked, as pieces had been stitched together but it was not stated on the radio.

So was there a decision by someone in the newsroom to make changes to a recorded speech to make it sound better for the person who was making the speech, and by who and why?

If so why was this made ? was it an agenda thing or a bias thing?

I don't think I'll take radio or audio news at face value anymore. I'm actually really disgusted to be honest.

Also as most people would be listening to this on the radio driving home for work, was this made to generate total effect for one side ?

Any thoughts on this and how prevalent is it ?

Firstly, the live speech wasn't manipulated, it was the recorded version played on radio.
I would guess it was edited for time purposes.
And the essential point being made wasn't changed,it would be different if it was manipulated to give a different interpretation of what was said.

Depends on how it was edited .... As it was mentioned in the OP

The person who did this edit - was it the MD of the organisation who is obviously in the thrall of the government?

    Unlikely.

It was a sound engineer who doesn't give a ****, he just has to get the clip down to whatever length. Then he plays it, usually once, to his editor who says "yep, that'll do". And out it goes.

Alright, this is a recent headline in full from a reputable publication.
Palestinian Shot by Israeli Troops at Gaza Border

What should a reader expect to find in the body in the article based on the headline?

This is the article under that heading from the NY Times

'JERUSALEM — Israeli forces patrolling the border with the Gaza Strip shot and wounded a Palestinian as he approached the border fence on Sunday and took him to an Israeli hospital, according to the military. A spokeswoman for the hospital said the Palestinian was a 10-year-old boy.

Israel’s border with Gaza has remained tense but relatively calm since Israel and Hamas, the Islamic militant group that dominates the Palestinian coastal enclave, agreed to an open-ended cease-fire in late August after a 50-day war.

A military spokeswoman, speaking on the condition of anonymity under army rules, said the troops spotted “a suspicious figure” approaching the fence, called on him to stop, and when he ignored the warnings they fired in the air and then at his lower body.'

Seems to me the article and the title are saying the same thing. Presumably you are commenting on the fact that it was a 10 year old boy? That is stated in the first paragraph. Are you saying there is a conspiracy? And why leave the question hanging?

Yes. The fact that the Israelis shot a child is the most significant aspect of the story. Could you explain how you could figure out a child was shot and nearly killed from the headline?

All I'm saying in the op is that the speech seemed edited to make it more impactful on the part of the person who made the speech, it was pretty damning when it was edited.. which leads me to why ? and for what reason ? and who would decide this ? I just think it was more abbrasive when edited for no reason only to throw more impact on the speech...

The same radio station played a clip a couple of nights later about a protest in Tallaght regarding abuse against a govt minister. An opponent to the water charges then said that the audio in the clip was actually about a protester who being man handled by the Garda, which was called out by the person they were interviewing on air and the presenter had to appologise...very strange..
