Anyone finding good value for money on rations at the moment .... Weather is driving all the cattle indoors and despite all the negative talk on beef prices I guess we better keep the system of fattening cattle going for 1 more winter at least

Due to the farce that is still going on with factories and prices we decided earlier this year not to finish cattle this winter. Only winners are the factories and the meal companies.
We will feed straights to young cattle/weanlings. We do have some cows to finish but they will spend the winter out on an out farm with good haylage type silage and a barley/maize/mineral mix.

Yeah, couldn't agree more with you on your decision ... Based on margins and shear frustration no doubt !! I ll be right behind you to next year as this will probably be the last year of fattening for us to .... After the result from last night's round table meeting I now have zero faith on the IFA to do something for the beef industry ... A sham !

Got a good deal today from a mill in kinsale... Hi maize beef cube. They are a new company but knew the rep from selling feed from the previous mill owners. Gives good advise and trustworthy. All we need now is a beef processor to give us a fair price when they are fat

Not being smart I'm not too sure ... It's owned by one of the west cork co- ops, Bandon co-op I think . I know it was formerly Goods of kinsale. Had bought of them for years and had built up a good relationship with the rep , who is now working for the new outfit . Good advice and always there for my nutritional back up. Will probably get some stick for getting feed from our local coop rep for buying of another company but quality of product and back up service is vital to.

I say all mills will be quiet this winter ... Had a line of sales reps in the gate over the last few weeks . All complaining of being quiet because of poor beef prices and dairy men over quote !

Comparing prices is pretty pointless without giving some idea of tonnage as well. One of u could be using 2t over the whole winter, the other could using 200t.

Yeah but deepsouthwest is right, if your buying a lot more ration off them they'll more than likely be able to squeeze the price down more,

With you there Reggie. It's not all about quantity ... I guess maybe your ability to pay for it is more important to a mill than how much you will take and hiw long they will have to wait until you pay
