    Check the coolant level.

Yup have a 2001 Laguna myself, have it nearly 8-9 years now. Mine developed that problem, my problem turned out to be a leak around the water pump seal. Had to get the pump and belt done around that time anyway so wasn't such a big deal. My heater motor packed up too at one stage but that would have different symptoms really.

From the OP's description it sounds like the heater motor has packed up too. That could be due to over-loading caused by a blocked pollen filter. That filter is located behind the glove box, you need to take out the liner of the glove box to get at it.
