I applied for a maternity cover position in the company i am employed with and completed the first part of the competition.

I received a call today to say i was successful to the next stage and was called forward for interview wednesday.

To be honest, since i did the first test, ive realised i dont want the position now. Also when i just told my mother, her reaction was what are you doing and she thought i was making a mistake.

Will it look bad if i call and say i do not want to do the interview or any advice of getting out of this

Just say you no longer wish to continue with your application. Write a proper letter and thank them etc. I doubt they will push you for an explanation but if so just say your personal circumstances have changed.

Why don't you want the job anymore?

I didnt know too much about the position to start with as it is in a completely different section to where i am now, and they painted it quite well in the description.

However, i went to visit the person whos maternity cover it was and she let me sit with her for a few hours to get a feel for it and although she couldnt have been more helpful, i found it wasnt exactly for me.

Im just worried that turning this down will effect future application for promotion.

I could risk doing the interview in the hope of being non successful but then i run the risk of being successful

Agree with this. Keep it professional and it'll be fine.

So folks, i tried this route and wrote how i would like to withdraw application as i had med appointments on day of interview and apologised for any inconvenience, also thanking them etc...

Got a call to reschedule for tomorrow. Which i said oh feck it as i really was afraid for future interviews that if i withdrew i would be ruining any future chance i had.

However, yesterday i did receive some news from the consultant that i didnt like, now its nothing life threatening but it is serious in the scale of things. Its been a bit of a mind feck to me and there is no way i can sit through an interview. I took today off work as the results are playing on me.

Now i really look bad to them when i call and put it in writing.

Just looking for quick last min advise before i do it.

Why, oh why, did you use the medical appointments as an excuse? Of course they suggested a rescheduling in that case. Just be straight out and say that you didn't want to continue with the application process. END OF.

Is there a HR contact that you can speak to informally? They might be able to direct you in what to say.

I know. But it genuinely was the case of med appointments.

I told them that due to this i would like to withdraw my application etc and they called me and said oh we would like to reschedule etc.

Now i should have stood my ground i kmow that. But i was in a panic as to future promotions.

I have the hr number however i doubt they would advise me off the record

Can't you say as a result of the medical appointments you no longer wish to continue with the application, that your personal circumstances at the moment aren't conducive to changing jobs?

To be honest, I'd say that you don't want to continue with the application as it doesn't fit with your current goals. You can say that you sat with the current incumbent (that should show initiative on your part). Based on that, you realised that you would like to seek other opportunities.

I went ahead with it as didnt want them to think i was messing around.

99% sure i wont be successful but i did it.

    Thanks all for advice
