Washer Dryer Issue

I have a question for the experts out there.

We got a new washing machine today, I installed it exactly how the guide told me to. When I went to do a test wash, I knew something was up straight away, I could only hear a small trickle of water running into the drawer, then after a min or two it just stopped and some lights started flashing. I googled and googled all day and eventually found that the flashing is an error code for the machine not filling in the set out time frame.

Ok, I check the troubleshooting table and I assume I have connected it up all wrong, so I basically uninstall the machine while checking for kinks in the pipe and checking the inlet filter. Check the water pressure, all is fine then re-install the unit.

The same issue happens about another 20 times until the OH comes home from work, goes to the toilet, flushes and hey presto the machine begins to fill. The machine will take enough water from the mains to keep it running while the toilet cistern is filling and proceeds through the wash, but when it comes to the rinse it wont take more than a trickle of water without the toilet being flushed.

What the hell is going on can anyone tell me?

    machine is a Candy GOW485 washer/dryer

Thats an unusual one but I would suspect its got to do with an air lock, highly unlikely that the loo is connected direct to the mains, try undoing the fill hose from the w/m and running a gallon or two of water into a bucket etc, if a lot of gurgling run until the noise stops
