Hi-what is the procedure for applying for Assistant Principal Posts in the VEC?-is there a standard application form-where do you get it from the ETB websites or school principal? -Also what is the current workload in reality of an assistant principal-is it constant hassle or manageable?-(ie-in light of non appointment/refilling of many posts). Also what areas should be prepared for questioning? Thanks

There's a standard form, at least there was in my ETB. It's a fair workload alright, particularly since these days one Assistant Principal probably tries to do the work that would have been done by two plus a couple of B posts in the past.

I'll move this to Teaching and Lecturing - much more likely to get informed answers.

Thank you Spurious-any advice appreciated-I was wondering if in reality remaining A post holders were being "squeezed" as other post holders left (from a sense of duty etc ^^) to fill in gaps..I know of someone who wished to give their post and wasn't allowed/strongly discouraged as it could not be replaced.

I know when I retired, my post wasn't replaced. I think the squeeze is being felt everywhere, though possibly lessened a bit where teachers are doing post work without a post. I know that's not supposed to happen, but you can't run a school without certain things being done.

the biggest squeeze is on the P and DP because post holders can only do so much due to their timetables etc and as spurious said, certain things must be done

I know of teachers chomping at the bit to do these roles for free to get the experience on the CV... Although, as someone said to me if these AP posts do come up it isn't necessarily the person doing it for free who will get it!!!

Hi thank you for your insights-would you have any ideas what line of questioning this might involve? What are the hot topics /usual ?

Mine mostly followed stuff I had put on the application form, giving me an opportunity to discusss my role in more detail. I think they were looking for someone with a broad general knowledge of both the system in general and our ETB in particular, someone who had opinions on the direction our school could go in, or suggestions of and capability to implement new ideas.
Looking at the bigger picture, in short.

It is past time that a template was put in place as regards the workload of post-holders in schools.I'm very aware that AP post-holders in some school have a very light work load (provide a timetable for in house exams once or twice a year) and in other cases where Special Duties teachers have a horrifying workload (inclusive of Year Head for a numbers of year groups,Sports Co-ordinator,Health and Safety Officer and PRO.) There is a distinct lack of fairness.Of course I can go further and point out the non-post holders that are 'bullied' into taking up jobs that they are not paid for and never will be.The Irish education system stinks and it will continue to until teachers stand up for themselves.
