Hey myself and a friend are looking into Au pairing in this area of Italy. Does anyone know the easiest/cheapest method of getting there as there doesn't seem to be a direct route? We would preferably go from Shannon airport or Knock airport but willing to go from any. Thanks

You might want to fly to Milan or Bologna, and from there catch a 'treno regionale' to Ancona. This would be the easiest and cheapest way to get there.
You can check the flights by yourself, as they often change, and follow this link to work on you train journey: trenitalia.com

Trenitalia is the major train service in the country, and it basically works with 3 lines: Frecciarossa (very fast, luxury trains, only for main stations), Frecciabianca/Eurostar (fast trains, very good comfort, mostly for the main destinations), and then come the treni regionali (regional trains, not so fast, not so comfy, but they'll take you almost everywhere and they are cheaper than the 2 other options).

So, being Ancona not one of the main cities on the rails, if you don't like the idea of switching your train in the middle of your journey, you might want to get a Regionale.

To get your ticket, check onto the site I posted above, looking for "offerte e servizi" and "altri treni", on the top menu.

Just noticed on the Trenitalia website there's an English translation button, so that's even easier :)

    -- EDIT --
Just checked the ryanair site. FunkyDa2 gave good advice. Flight would be easier and maybe cheaper aswell.
