What is Pobal?

So my mam gets this text this morning from a meteor number, that states her name and uses a bit.ly link, being extremely vague and looking like the most dodgy ****e I've ever seen.

I put the link into the iPad on a proxy to be on the safe side, and it leads me to Pobal.ie

It claims to be a government supported funding something or other. It is seriously the most dodgy looking legitimate site I've ever seen on the Internet, and looks (and more than likely is) real, but it's the most vague site I have ever seen in my life.

Just what the hell is Pobal, why did they have my mothers name and number and why did they use the worst method of contacting her, without saying just what they do?

I really don't know where to file this post, After Hours to be on the safe side.

You're very right, the website does look extremely vague, "doing good stuff on behalf of the government" seems to be about as much detail as you get.

Strikes me as a nice anonymous place for politically connected people to get cushy jobs and be rewarded with 6 figure salaries and the obligatory bonuses regardless of actual work done.

just looked at the board and majority are heavily connected to politics or industry , the site states that they work voluntarily but receive exspensis.

    Pobal are a classic quango.

    Money goes in.
Little comes out other than an annual report asking for more money.

The place where I work is funded by Pobal

That's of no use to you I'd imagine but thought I'd share anyway :)

Nope, it's not of use to me but at least someone has heard of them.
Seriously, i can't find any mention of them on Google searches leading to pages other than their own, and based on what little research everyone's done here, they scare me :/

Why are they sending out texts

Your guess is as good as mine. It's not that they're sending texts as a "government supported agency", it's HOW they're doing it, WHO they're sending them to and isn't the timing a bit odd? With all this water crap going around, people are less supportive of the Government than ever.

    Why would they scare you?

And having a quick look at their site, it seems fine to me though I wouldn't be impressed by a text. Why not call them and see what they're looking for?

I've sent them a tweet and they replied very quickly. I'll email soon.

They are not a charity but are a not for profit state funded group to support community enterprises. Quite legit. Sorry OP if their website isn't up to your standards but I aware of a couple of projects they helped obtain funding for.

They handle all weekly payments to people on all employment schemes nationwide among many other funding administration roles.

    Who pays for the texts?

Either give a big amount of money to a political party, or else go canvassing and putting up posters for one of their candidates for elections, and hope that person gets elected
