He has that eye most lad will know what i mean, when i feed him if the bitch in with him as much as goes near him he pounce and give her going over. When were out and about he fine want to please will let me handle him no problem and he great in cover best i ever had and i;ve had a few. By the way he is i'd say he's been beaten so what to do :confused :confused:I must add that this dog was locked up 24 7 when i got him and ive only brought him out a few times as the wood cock are not here in any numbers and seen as he highly strung this cant be helping him so from now on i'll give him more work.

How long have you had him??
If only a short while,it is a fear issue as he associates raised hand, being talked down to as punishment or pain.So you have to establish trust with him that he isnt going to be hit or beaten and work out a different set of hand commands if you must use them that dont cause him to react defensively to you.
Make him understand that you are his buddy and are not going to hit him or abuse him and the more you work with him and are around with him the more he will realise that there is no reason to be defensive.

The food fighting .Pretty normal for dogs that have had to fight for their grub in a kennel situation.Does he take or bully the other dogs away from theirs? If so he is discovering that he can be the alpha dog in the pack and push the others about and take their food.More importantly..Can you take the bowl away from him without him confronting you??That is the more important one, that you can take food off him if need be.I'd say your other dogs will have got the message and will stay away from him when he is eating. If it continues, best then to feed him seperate from the others.

what age is he the older the dog that has been mistreated will take longer to bond with.its all new to him if he was been locked up 24/7.DONT feed him with the other dogs its a recipe for the disaster.i know im going through the same with a springer dog i got [4 year old].he has had a few fights now and last night a bad 1 with the pointer biting his paw bad so out of action for a week or so.iv my fella 3 months now and he is still coming out of his shell.lift the bowl above your head when feeding him and talk loud to him wind him up in a good way and he MIGHT depending how bad he was mistreated stop that growl.best of luck Allan

did you buy him or get him for nothing. if you bought him bring him back and get your money back. if you got him for nothing, still give him back

Give him a bita time.I wouldn't give him back if he came from a bad home. A cross springer is usually a nervous r fearfull one.it would be a shame for a good hunting dog to go back or be moved on for maybe the same to happen again

keep him away from children, as its not if he will bit them but when and get good insurance. He is a liability ,best thing is to get rid of him and if you are thinking of breeding him with your bitch, them most of your pups will turn out the same.

its lads like you that get my back up.GET RID whats that going to achieve.pass him so he is someone elses problem.as the op said the dog was locked up 24/7 and miss treated by the sounds of it.All the dog needs is time he still is only young.breeding hasnt came into it.if the lines are their why shouldnt he be bred from just because he was mistreated and now unsure of peolpe.80 percent of dogs problems are man made as is the dog in question.now if you said the dog was hard mouthed or wined when hunting THEN you know not to breed from.as for children well everyone should be cautious of any dog around. But especial when a new dog is brought in to the house

when I say get rid, either put him down or give him back to where you got him. why do you think they got rid of him. Better to start fresh again than to waste time on an aggressive dog.

I got my first springer 33 years ago and since then have had maybe 20 so i think i know when one should be put down or given a chance.

well good luck to you on your quest. I don't have dogs, quite as long as your self, only 29 years. I have hunted with a lot of lads over the years and anyone that had an aggressive dog going into a trailer full of dogs soon lost their welcome.

Thank u. I will bring him out with one of my other springers today for a hour and see how they get on, He's fine around the house with them so will sewhat he does in the van. He's not a bad dog just highly strung all he want to do is hunt,

Some people just don't understand dogs or can't train them which could be part of the problem with this one. one of my bitches will bark or growl if she feels nervous or threatend or if she thought anyone she knows well was threatend god help u! But she's a smashing dog to work with & I wouldn't sell her for any money & its not visciousness in her at all

i had a dog years ago that i got he was fairly mistreated and gave him a few months with him i brought him everywhere even to the shop and i often made a half hour to an hour and gave all my attention to him as this gave the dog a bit of confidence, as the months went by he came on leaps and bounds as he trusted me and every command i gave he followed i used this dog for rabbit, bird and rat hunting he was a great dog. he'd often catch the odd bird as his hunting instinct was off the charts.

my advice to you would be work with the dog show him you mean no harm by raisin your hand he will come to trust you i assure you.
