Changing air filter and oil filter on Nissan Primera

Hi there. I have a 2004 Nissan Primera and its starting to jolt in every gear. Sparks were only replaced 2 months ago so couldn't be that.

I was meant to do the air filter but a mate said it looked clan and to not bother. Oil filter and oil has been bought but never got around to changing it so I am assuming this could be the problem.

My friend isnt being very helpful anymore so will have to try sort it myself. Should I just drop it in somewhere and pay the cost? In order to remover the oil filter I need some clamp that fits around it. Should I just buy this and do it myself or will it cost a lot more compared to paying someone?

Today is the best opportunity I will get to sort this problem before it gets any worse so any tips or advice would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks

Change your oil if you want but I doubt it will solve your problem. Handy enough job to do if you do a bit of reading up first on how much oil it takes, where the filter is etc. There is a how to service your car sticky in DIY. The types of filter can vary. It may come off by hand but you will more than likely need some sort of suitable tool to take it off.

Sounds more like a misfire you have. Is it stuttering and jolting when you try to accelerate from a stand still? Could be the coil pack if it is. You'll have to get it checked out, scanned for fault codes etc.

So dirty oil and oil filter would not cause this kind of problem? The thing is it's not consistently shuddering and loosing power upon accelerating. Some days there's no problem at all with it.

Yeah getting my hand on tools is a must so might look to a different mate :p

I'm trying to avoid any cost as I have already bought the right amount of oil, air filter and oil filter. At the same time I highly rely on my car for work so causing further damage worries me..

Sounds like a misfire for sure. Ignition coils would be where I'd start. Any lights appearing on dash,??

Will take a look at the dash when I get back in it.

How much are we talking about for repairs and will further use damage anything??

If it's a single coil gone I think they cost around 100e from Nissan an are very easy to replace. Your problem is u need to get the Car scanned for error faults to determine if it is a coil an more to the point, which coil! As u have 4 . A diagnostic reading/scanning can cost 40-70 Euro

New oil won't fix jolting but you should change it anyway if it's been over a year or so.

Go get her scanned an it will solve your issue. Had a neighbour with same issue in ironically the same Car only a few weeks ago. A new coil pack from Nissan solved the issue. 15 Minutes replaced it. Car running a1 now ;)

So its been two days now with no issue. If the problem is the coil is it common for the symptoms to come and go? NCT is due soon would it be a better option to go get that done instead of paying for a scan?

So anyone think the NCT will pin point a specific coil?? Also what kind of damage could I do and to what over time?

Nct will not tell you anything helpful like that unfortunately.

I think it sounds like a dirty fuel filter. Has that been changed recently?

Fuel filter? Where and what is that. Sorry my knowledge of cars is minimal :) No Only things that have been changed are oil filter and oil 6,000 km ago. Air filter was changed around the same milage.

OP maybe I have missed it, but is the car petrol or diesel?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 508 ✭✭✭DarraghR

    Its petrol. 2004 Nissan Primera

So when you press the accelerator, the car hesitates before delivering power, but as the engine speed increases, it's behaving normally?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 508 ✭✭✭DarraghR

Yes pretty much. It moves fine in 4th and 5th. The shaking has kind of stopped but power from 1st to 3rd has decreased.

I know I haven't pin pointed the problem yet but what kind of damage could I do to the car if I keep driving it in it's current condition?

Damage to the Catalytic converter can result if the car is driven with a misfire for a length of time.
