Stone cladding over external wall insulation??

    Hi Everyone,

We're thinking of getting external wall insulation panels put on the house and I'm just wondering is it possible to put stone cladding over the external wall insulation panels once they're on the walls?

If the house was plastered first (over the external wall insulation panels) could the stone cladding be used on top of that?

or would the stone cladding pull the panels off the walls again due to the weight of the stone cladding?

    Any ideas or recommendations?

    Thanks in advance :)

Brick slips over external wall insulation is common enough so some form of faux stone may be possible.
-snip-have a great showroom with a lot of different finishes on show. Can't recall if stone was one of them.

The problem with external insulation is that 'generally' the maximun thickness the EWI can support is 15-20mm and you can't get a decent aesthetic with that depth of stone cladding.

I've seen EWI 'slump' with render, never mind cladding.

Unless they have an Agrement cert or something for that specific application, I'd be reluctant. Not only is the weight of the cladding to be considered, but also the method of fixing of the EWI to the wall behind it.

yes, it would be pointless to try to design it in

just build a 250 cavity, pumped, with outer block leaf for the cladding

Exactly what we're talking about, Thank you. ;)

I contacted a stone and brick cladding company here in Ireland since my original post and they said:

The brick cladding is suitable for external insulation as the tiles are only about 14mm thick.
