Still loving the Tanco Bale shear. It has about 4k bales fed with only wear on the 5 teeth. Only sharpened it once so far.(must do it again.)

It is good once you get used to it. Took around 3 bales the I get used to it. Grabbed plastic and net every time so far

Do you have it on a farm loader? Seen one at a demo and thought they looked heavy.

Yep its on a 130 hp Zetor. Zetor is only 4 cylinder and loader has fantastic reach(ie.I think it would suit 6 cylinder tractor)
Fusion bales up to 920 kgs(wet) and with reasonable care it preforms as close to perfect as I need. Ps.I should have a weight on the back, but don't.

Opened and striped 23 bales today in 40 mins. Man in ground with knife.

Thinking of grab, would it be any quicker

Soft drive on a loader is a gift

In a similar boat here, but having the shear grab would mean that on the days that I have no help, I could still fire in the bales on my own. How long would it have taken to feed out that many bales without help?

I'd be thinking the same. With the majority of balers in the country still running net and very little 'plastic on plastic" setups, l can see a sight of work separating the net from wrap and then putting them into storage even with a bale shear.

If you are looking to slice them the original design mchale seems a great option for third of the price.

Youd possibly hace fed those 23 bales in the same length as it took to open with knife if not less time id imagine.
Could ye sell shear grab and buy the tanco equivalent?

We do pit first cut pit silage and 100-200 bales, its a pain opening the bales on your own so i could see the advantage of the bale slice but could not afford it
so i seen a guy on youtube opening them with a shear grab, so i do it this way now and it works, i know i dont have the clamp but its easy enough gather up the plastic and net afterwards

Where a bale shear really comes into its own is where you have a part time guy who has to feed cattle in the morning but doesnt want to stink of silage when going into the office

Youve obviously never fed silage in morn went off for afternoon came back and smelt your clothes. The smell gets into your clothes weather you wear gloves or not

It would probably save you 40 mins in that it would be a 1 man job, and safer as you don't have someone down walking around the passage while your moving bales about...

The sorting shouldn't be to big a deal, a 2grain fork would pick them out fairly handy!

... and a pocket knife is very handy for cutting plastic! :D

To be honest if feeding a large number of bales the cheapest option is possibly to get a roll on roll off dropped in the corner of the yard, then just dump the whole lot into it, no sorting, no worrying about bits of grass in it, and you can throw anything else about the yard into it aswell.

you still have to pull the nett away from the plastic and usually have a god lump of silage stuck in there as well, still its handy tool and they are fed for a couple of days barr pushing it in a bit the 2nd day with tractor

Yeah. A mate reckons he can do it. Mills hydraulics in mullingar have a kit I think. Somewhere between €300 and €600 I think.

Yep, it's only a matter of getting the bottles, we got ones from Nelson hydraulics years ago, €200 a pop, but can probably be got cheaper now.

Just have to t them into each side of lift rams

Was thinking today as I pulled mould off a bale if I had a shear feeding in diet feeder I would never see the mould

Would a 90hp tractor be able for a bale shear either the cashels or nugent type

I don't have one but I think it would be far too heavy for a 90hp tractor when you factor in the Wright of the bale too.

I was looking at the tanco and the cashel shears. They have different plastic/net retaining systems. Which one would grab less silage. Anyone with experience of them.
The cashel has 4 hooks and the tanko has a 8 inch wide clamp
