    Hi guy's,

I bought a ford mondeo tdci 2.0 ghia today that has NI registration but the seller never paid VRT and handed me a UK logbook.

He said the VRT should only be 300 quid or so, but motorcheck.ie calculate it to be 540.

I then read that VRT needs to be paid within 7 day's of the vehicle entering the country which I have no idea when it came here..

    Should I be worried?

Eh yeah you should be worried, you need to pay VRT, basically ASAP....
I don't want to go into the 'logistics' of your purchase.

There was a car on adverts and I met the guy, tested the car and bought it cheap, what do u reckon the vrt will be? how do I get evidence of when it arrived in the state?

As far as I'm aware....The VRT will be calculated on the date you arrive to pay it. And as it will only be registered in Ireland on that date, well I don't think arrival date is needed..
    I stand to be corrected.

So no worries then? The car is in amazing shape though, I would be willing to put a decent bit of money into it.. As long as the VRT isn't going to be something rediculous like €2,000 then I'm happy!

It would be advisable to turn up to vrt centre with a receipt of purchase from someone in northern ireland dated a few days earlier.

How do you get a receipt if you buy from a private seller? just write a docket and get the seller to sign it?

    write it yourself.

    That would be it; I'd hope too that you did searches and also hope that he hasn't previously come to the attention of any authorities who might have recorded the presence of the car in the state. Obviously NI cars are here all the time but if there's a chance that he sold it because he was threatened with seizure I'd consider whether it's best to sell it on;

Don't think they care on how much you paid for it. They go off the OMSP and work VRT as % of OMSP.

OP, are you aware it is illegal for a non-trader to sell a foreign registered car in Ireland?

Yeah OP, go back to the seller and get your money back........

Best remedy is to "obtain" a receipt dated very recently as said.

What year is it? 2l petrol or diesel?(EDIT, just saw TDCI so €540 would be the right figure)

I'd say your in 36% category for VRT if its petrol, that's €720 (Unless its worth more than the min of €2000, then it'll be more)

it's illegal for a Dealer to sell one too, unless it's to another approved dealer. That's not the OPs problem though

You make it sound as if you were expecting the car to be Irish reg'd and the fact that it hadn't been vrt'd caught you bu surprise or something?

Did you not notice the yellow reg or did you not think VRT had to be paid?
