My young fella (16) says he wants to give cycling a go. Any suggestions on reasonable priced road bike. What are the carrera bikes in halfords like. Or the btwin bikes from decathlon. Or are these rubbish. Don't want to spend too much cos first time he's showed interest.

Those two are regularly touted as the best in that price range, and I can believe that but have no personal experience of either.
However if you can find a second hand regular brand eg trek 1.2, giant defy, or specialized allez in a size suitable for him, they will sell again without much loss if he gets fed up of it (hopefully not) or outgrows his current size (likely enough).
Good few of these knocking about if you have time, and will be a bit better specced than new ones mentioned.
Edit - just spotted 53 cm cube peleton for 400 in Kildare on adverts.ie (no connection). Check out size, but might be got for a bit less.
Also could post wanted ad in cycling adverts here and see what comes up. Your location in country may influence your level of choice.
